Over the course of the story she grows closer to Manfred, and forms a romantic relationship with him, eventually marrying him.

Biography

Starting Out

Miss Martin moved to California after working at least one prior job in Texas, where she was born. Upon reaching her new home state, she finds that she's stuck living in a cramped apartment and working in the basement of the LA prosecutor's office. With little to do in her new job, and only one coworker, she asks for something else to do, and gets a task: sending out a test phishing email to the whole building.

Not satisfied with the template she's given, she makes her own, more convincing emails, and sends them. She sees that the first to fall for it is someone called Manfred von Karma, and tells her supervisor, who immediately realizes something bad is about to happen.

Not long after, Manfred comes down to the basement in a rage, at first blaming Todd before he learns it was wasn't his fault. The prosecutor turns his anger on Miss Martin, whose attempts at calming things down only make the situation worse, and Manfred leaves the basement even more upset.

Todd anticipates that his new coworker is going to be fired soon, and warns her that von Karma will likely attempt to get some sort of revenge first.

A New Career

At the end of that week, Manfred returns and tells Miss Martin that she's being reassigned from the IT department to become his personal assistant. During the first morning in her new role, she finds that Manfred hasn't given her a place to sit or put her belongings, leaving her to stand still and quiet for hours holding a backpack full of her things - save for a bag of chocolate, which she offers to a bewildered Manfred.

In the afternoon, they head out to a crime scene in a city park, where Manfred struggles with the summer heat in his heavy suit. Miss Martin expresses her concern and offers to take his suit jacket back to his car, then gives him some of her water to drink.

Manfred's demeanor changes somewhat after this, and over the weekend Miss Martin finds out that he's paid her overtime for working late and comes to work the next week to find a desk waiting for her. She shares a somewhat friendly conversation with him, though he gets angry again when she calls his perfect record 'lucky', as she assumes it must be Manfred's good fortune that every defendant is actually guilty. Manfred apologizes somewhat after this, and offers her the rest of the day off as well as the entire day after, and asks her to come watch him in court that Wednesday.

An Unexpected Date

From the gallery, Miss Martin watches as Manfred goes through a trial, showing her his ruthless technique and total domination of the courtroom. At the end, he reveals that he's only been toying with the opposing defense attorney, saving a crucial piece of evidence until the end which immediately resolves the case. Before a verdict can be declared, the defendant shouts out that Manfred must've forged the evidence in an outburst which isn't immediately shut down by the judge. The whispers in the gallery tell Miss Martin that such an idea isn't entirely ridiculous.

Manfred eventually regains control of the room, and a verdict of guilty is declared. On the way back to the prosecutor's office, he asks Miss Martin out to dinner to celebrate, and she agrees, though she thinks he's talking about a business dinner with the other LA prosecutors. That Friday, she arrives at the fanciest restaurant she's ever seen to meet only Manfred outside and realizes he was asking her on a date.

After a moment of embarrassment, she accepts the offer somewhat reluctantly. Over the course of dinner, she finds out that her simple acts of kindness were all it took to make Manfred interested in her, and begins to realize that she might actually like him too. The date ends with a hug.

Her First Boyfriend

Their next date is in the same park they went to for an investigation, and it's too much for Miss Martin, who has no experience dating and is shown to be uncomfortable with physical intimacy as it can overwhelm her. Despite this, Manfred comforts her and accepts her differences, and he tells her he's willing to go as slowly as she needs.

Outside of that, their relationship progresses quickly, with Manfred inviting her to his estate for dinner and asking her to move in with him that night. She agrees, and moves her things over the next day.

A New Family

Manfred's younger daughter, Franziska, comes to visit from Germany and seems to immediately dislike Miss Martin. She eventually finds out that the reason for this is Manfred's ex-wife, who cheated on him and he divorced when Franziska was very young.

Miss Martin does manage to convince her that she genuinely loves Manfred, and Franziska's visit ends with a trip to a local karaoke bar that treats the von Karmas as minor celebrities.

Forged Evidence

Around a year after first meeting Manfred, she accompanies him to a crime scene at an aquarium. Not normally wanting to see any gory details of her boyfriend's trials, she only comes to look at fish while Manfred works. When they arrive, the defense attorney working on the case is already there, but Manfred chases him off.

When Miss Martin leaves Manfred to look around the aquarium, she runs into the attorney, who tries to talk to her. He makes her start to doubt her husband's tactics, telling her exactly how he's going to 'solve' a case and get the defendant found guilty despite the lack of evidence and even a body- by forging his own evidence as well as proof that the victim was fed to a shark in an aquarium exhibit.

At home that night, she confronts Manfred and he all but confirms what the defense attorney told her. She's upset and pleads with him to stop, or to retire, or to turn in the one helping him forge evidence- anything to keep him from potentially being caught and jailed. But Manfred isn't willing to give up his career or his record, and though he almost seems to like the idea of putting the chief prosecutor in prison, he knows betraying Blaise would land him there as well.

Happily Ever After

Though she isn't hopeful that Manfred will ever change his ways, Miss Martin still doesn't want him to suffer for all the bad he's done. She uses the skill and experience she was first hired for and gathers all of Blaise Debeste's records of evidence forgery, then scrubs them of Manfred's name. She expects that to be her last gift to him, but he insists she comes to watch his next trial and she agrees.

When the trial begins, Manfred tells the courtroom how Blaise was punished for his corruption in his opening statement, and then immediately rests his case to the judge's (and the gallery's) shock. Miss Martin realizes he's doing it for her, publicly making a display of forfeiting a trial and giving up his forty year perfect record.

After a verdict of 'not guilty' is declared, the courtroom empties while Miss Martin and Manfred remain behind. She goes to him at the prosecutor's bench and tells him how proud she is, and Manfred informs her that he replaced Blaise as chief prosecutor. After asking her if she'll still be his assistant, to which she says yes, he proposes to her. She's overjoyed and the two are wed in the very same courtroom just over a month later.

Personality

She tends to be kind to others, even those who treat her poorly. It's this part of her that causes Manfred to fall for her in the first place. If she sees an opportunity to help someone, she will.

She's incredibly asocial outside of work, confessing to Manfred after a short time that he's the person she's talked to the most since she got to California, with only Todd as a comparable second place. This can also come across in her speech, as she tends to stumble over her words often when she does manage to speak. She's also entirely unfamiliar with dating, having had no experience with it before Manfred. Nearly any action can provoke a blush in her, from words to any amount of physical touch.

Some of this is explained during her date with Manfred at the park, when she reveals she's autistic (and implied to have been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, though that disorder is never explicitly named). The conversation also shows a bit more of her personality: that she's desperate to be seen as a capable and professional adult, no matter how much she struggles, and that she's reluctant to let others see too much of her personality and interests for fear they'll disapprove. After that date, she's more open with Manfred about her true self.

Interests

She enjoys playing video games, and is shown playing one at the beginning of Chapter 10. Though the name of the game being played isn't explicitly named, it's actually Morrowind, and the mention of the class questionnaire making Manfred a rogue was based on the author trying to answer the questions as Manfred might.

Notes

  • Her appearance is based on the author / this wiki writer, though few physical details are ever described in the story.
  • In Your #0001 Fan and all related stories, she is the only one to use first person POV. This point of view is the most common one in all related fics, leading to a lot of insight into her thinking and relatively little into that of other characters. There have been several uses of third person limited which provide a view into other characters' heads, most often Manfred's.
  • Spiders are her favorite animal.
